What is Allergic Rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, is an allergic reaction affecting the nasal passages, triggered by allergens like pollen, dust mites, mould, or pet dander. The body reacts when allergens are breathed in through the nose and mouth, releasing a natural chemical called histamine which causes symptoms.
It can be seasonal, due to pollen, or perennial (occurring year round), caused by indoor allergens. Management includes avoiding allergens, using medications such as antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids, and sometimes immunotherapy.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE
Allergic rhinitis comes in many forms.
Symptoms are often similar to a cold, which include:
Runny nose
Stuffy nose
Sneezing (usually repetitive)
Itchy nose, throat, eyes and ears
