What is Chickenpox
Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is characterised by an itchy, blister-like rash, with the rash usually starting on the face, scalp, or trunk and then spread to other parts of the body. Although chickenpox is generally mild in children, it can be more severe in newborns and children with weakened immune systems. Vaccination has significantly reduced the incidence of chickenpox, but it remains an important illness to recognise and manage.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE
Symptoms of chickenpox include:
Itchy red bumps or rashes that develop into fluid-filled blisters over the face & body
The blisters pop and start leak, before they crust and scab over before finally healing
Fever, loss of appetite, tiredness or headache may occur 1 - 2 days before the rash
